There has been a lot of recent press, some negative about the use of mobility scooters on public footpaths and roads. A number of accidents involving scooters damaging public or private property or even injuring individuals have resulted in some members of the public and the press expressing negative views on the use of scooters and that there are potentially a dangerous vehicles that should not be allowed on public footpaths, or at the least have to be insured and the drivers undertake some form of test to ensure they are capable of driving the scooter safely.
In our views such people do not understand how a mobility scooter can enhance the life of a person with limited mobility, and assist in regaining their independence. We do agree that adequate insurance should be taken out.
Although currently not a legal requirement, having insurance to cover theft of the scooter or damaged caused to people property of even themselves should be carefully considered. In today’s culture of suing for damages, the correct insurance would cover such eventualities. We also feel it is important that a new owner of a scooter if given an induction on how to safely operate the scooter. Not a test, but ensuring the owner can drive it safely, and also get the most out of their new scooter.
