We are often asked if a mobility scooter can be stored outside and whether it is appropriate to do so. Ideally a scooter should be stored in a secured dry place with electricity to charge the scooter when not in use, or when charging is required. The issues for storing a scooter outside are; protecting it from the weather as especially rain can cause damage to the scooters; security and problems with theft; and charging the scooter.
Protecting from the weather- the scooter can be protected from the rain by covering in a weather proof cover, as illustrated below.

Security protection – a material cover as above will not offer security against theft, vandalism or any form of crime. A more sturdy or purpose build mobility scooter storage unit will be required which will offer greater security over a material cover. The below picture is an example of such storage.

Charging the scooter – one of the issues with storing the scooter outside is that a power supply will be required to charge the scooter. The power has to be supplied in a safe manner and an electrician should be consulted to ensure this is done correctly.
Ensuring your mobility scooter is stored in a dry secure environment will prolong its life and help maintain it in good working condition.
